Here’s a sweet way to brighten up a spring day!  Inspired by the gorgeous Ginger Blossom line of fabrics by Sandi Henderson, this appliqué pattern is just perfect with any of the Ginger Blossom fabrics.  Or any fabrics at home in your stash!  I’ve been working on creating little projects that you can do using scraps of fabric you already have on hand, and something that you could finish up in an afternoon while the kids are napping or off at school.

So, if you are wanting to tackle a small project to get started sewing, or if you are just looking for a simple, fun, quick and easy project . . . . this is perfect for you!

BASIC SUPPLIES

One cotton knit t-top     *  Fabric scraps

*  Matching thread     *  Fusible interfacing     *  Fusible web

STEP 1: Prepare the t-top

100_1913  Begin by pressing fusible interfacing to the INSIDE of the  t-top.  The interfacing should cover the entire area that you will be stitching on.

***********************************

STEP 2: Prepare the fabric

100_1914 Press fusible web on the WRONG side of several scraps of the fabric that you want to use for the flower petals, leaves, and stem of your appliqué.

 ************************************************

STEP 3: Cut out the appliqué pieces

100_1915 Print out the enclosed appliqué pattern, pin the pattern pieces onto your fabric scraps, and cut out the petals, leaves, and stem.

****************************************

Once you have all of your pieces cut out, lay them out on the front of the  t-top until you have the design placed the way you want it.  You will want to peel the backing from the fusible web off of each of the appliqué pieces before laying out your design.  This will make it a bit easier once you have it the way you want it, to begin pressing the pieces in place.

*****************************************

STEP 4:  Press and stitch the first “layer” of the appliqué

100_1917 As you are laying out the appliqué pieces, you will notice that different pieces go under and over each other.  In this pattern, the leaves will be stitched in place first, before you stitch on the stem.

***************************************

100_2608Remove all pieces of the design from the t-top except for the leaves.  Press them securely in place.  With your machine set for a wide, close zig-zag stitch (on my machine that is a setting of 3.6 WIDTH on a scale of 0 – 5.5 and a setting of .30 LENGTH on a scale of 0 – 5.0), begin stitching on one of the long, gently curving edges.   This stitch is called an appliqué stitch, or is sometimes called a satin stitch.  Take two or three straight stitches at the end of your stitching to secure the stitches in place.

 ***********************************

STEP 5:  Stitch the remaining “layers” of the appliqué

100_1918 Peel the fusible web backing off of the stem appliqué piece, and place it on the front of the t-top, making sure to cover the ends of both of the leaves.  Press in place, and stitch onto the t-top using the same appliqué stitch.

*************************************

100_1919 Once you have the stem appliqué stitched in place, the next step is to begin to “build” the flutter flower.  Start with the small pink petal, and center it slightly below the end of the stem, where you want the flower to be.

**********************************

100_1921 Press securely in place, and stitch all around the petal using the same appliqué stitch.   Take two or three straight stitches over the zig-zag stitches at the end of your stitching, to secure the zig-zag stitches in place.

*******************************

100_1922 Place two of the larger petals on top of the first, smaller petal.  These two petals should meet at the top of the flower, right at the end of the stem.  Place them so that the smaller petal is just “peeking” out between them.  Press securely in place, and stitch to the t-top using the same appliqué stitch.  Take two or three straight stitches over the zig-zag stitches at the  end of your stitching, to secure the zig-zag stitches in place.

 *************************

100_1924

Finally, place the final two, large petals in place, over the other two petals, making sure that the other two petal are “peeking” out below the final two petals.  Press securely in place, and stitch to the t-top using the same appliqué stitch.  Take two or three straight stitches over the zig-zag stitches at the end of your stitching, to secure the zig-zag stitches in place.

***********************************

100_1925 Press your finished appliqué, and there you have a sweet, simple Flutter Flower t-top for spring!

Print out the applique pattern templates below, and then cut out the shapes from your favorite fabric.
